Itauba hardwood deck tiles offer an attractive, durable, and cost-effective alternative to Ipe for elevated roof decks, terraces and other outdoor spaces.
Archatrak Itauba wood deck tiles combine the warmth and natural character of tropical hardwood with the simplicity of a modular, pedestal-supported deck system. The distinctive, lighter color grain and natural variation of Itauba create an attractive wood surface for commercial and residential outdoor spaces.
Supported at each corner by adjustable-height pedestals, the tiles create a stable, elevated deck surface without the cost and complexity of conventional wood or steel joist systems. The modular installation also eliminates the need to fasten individual decking boards to joists.
Made from Itauba, a dense South American hardwood well suited to exterior applications, the tiles feature natural variations in color and grain that give each installation a distinctive appearance.
Archatrak Itauba wood deck tiles are available in:
- 24” x 24” and 24” x 48”(nom.)
- Additional sizes are available, subject to minimum order quantities and production lead times
Benefits of Itauba Structural Wood deck Tiles
Convenient Access Below the Deck
Individual tiles can be lifted and replaced as needed, providing convenient access to the roof surface, drains and services below the deck.
Greater Budget Flexibility
Itauba provides a cost-effective tropical hardwood option for projects where natural wood is desired but Ipe may exceed project budget requirements.
Faster and Simpler Deck Installation
No need for wood or steel joists or extensive sub-structures. No nailing, screwing or clipping planks to joists.
Reduced Rooftop Weight
The modular tile and pedestal system minimizes the need for heavier structural components and more complex support systems..
Easier Jobsite Handling
Individual tiles and pedestals are easy to transport and move to rooftop installation areas, including locations with limited access.
No Roof Membrane Penetration
Pedestals are loose laid over the roof surface, with wide bases that distribute loads without penetrating the waterproof membrane.

Installation
Archatrak Itauba wood tiles can be installed as an elevated deck with adjustable-height pedestal supports positioned beneath each tile corner, eliminating the need for a conventional joist system.
For patio resurfacing and other low-height applications, the tiles may also be supported on fixed-height rubber pads. Adequate airflow beneath the tiles is essential, and installations should be designed to prevent prolonged exposure to standing water.
See the links below for more information and guidelines for each installation method.

Maintenance
Itauba is a dense tropical hardwood well suited to exterior applications and requires relatively little routine maintenance. Regular cleaning to remove dirt, leaves and other surface debris will help maintain the appearance of the deck and prevent organic material from accumulating between the tiles.
When left unfinished and exposed to sunlight and weather, Itauba will gradually lose its original color and develop a natural grey patina. This weathering is normal. For projects where maintaining the original wood tones is preferred, a penetrating exterior hardwood oil or finish suitable for dense tropical hardwoods can be applied and reapplied as needed based on exposure and appearance.
Natural variations in color, grain and occasional darker markings are characteristic of Itauba and should be expected. Individual tiles can also be lifted from the pedestal system when necessary for cleaning or access to the roof surface below.

Limited Warranty
Structural Deck Tiles
Archatrak Itauba wood deck tiles can be secured to their supporting pedestals with a specialized fastener and washer assembly that locks the tile corners in place. This added restraint is particularly important for high-rise rooftops and projects in high-wind areas. Proper perimeter restraint at walls, parapets or railings is also essential. See the wind uplift document in the Downloads section above for additional details and installation guidance.
Both Itauba and Ipe are dense tropical hardwoods well suited to exterior decking, but they differ in appearance, physical properties and price. Itauba typically has a lighter yellow-brown to medium-brown appearance, while Ipe is generally darker and denser. For projects seeking the natural look and durability of tropical hardwood with greater budget flexibility, Itauba provides a cost-effective alternative to Ipe.
Yes. Itauba is a dense, strong tropical hardwood suitable for structural applications. Archatrak Itauba wood deck tiles are designed to span between pedestal supports positioned at each corner, creating an elevated deck surface without conventional wood or steel joists.
Yes. Like other natural hardwoods, Itauba will gradually weather when exposed to sunlight and outdoor conditions, with its original yellow-brown to medium-brown tones eventually developing a silvery-grey patina. This natural weathering does not indicate deterioration of the wood. If maintaining the original color is preferred, a penetrating exterior hardwood oil can be applied and periodically renewed.
Itauba and Garapa are both dense tropical hardwoods used for exterior decking, but they differ in appearance and physical characteristics. Itauba typically ranges from yellow-brown to darker brown tones, while Garapa generally has a lighter, more golden appearance. Itauba is also recognized for its high natural durability and resistance to decay, making it well suited to exposed outdoor applications. Both species will naturally weather to a grey patina when left unfinished.
