Archatrak structural wood tiles are manufactured exclusively from Ipe wood, a premium hardwood known for its exceptional stability, long service life, density, and resistance to weathering and insect attack. These inherent properties make Ipe an ideal material for exterior decking applications, allowing Archatrak wood deck tiles to maintain their structural integrity and attractive appearance over time with minimal maintenance.
Ipe wood naturally exhibits variation in color and grain, both between individual tiles and within the slats of a single tile. These tonal differences are a defining characteristic of real hardwood and contribute to the richness and visual appeal of the finished deck surface. As the tiles are exposed to the elements, these variations gradually soften, and the wood will weather to a consistent silvery-gray patina if left untreated.
Archatrak Ipe wood tiles are supplied without surface sealers or decking oils, though a protective wax is applied to the ends of each slat to reduce the risk of cracking or checking. If no sealer is applied after installation and the tiles are allowed to weather naturally, slight wax “bleeding” may occur, sometimes appearing as temporary water staining at the ends of the boards. This effect will diminish over time as the tiles age, although when wet, subtle color differences may remain visible longer due to residual wax within the wood pores.
Maintaining Ipe Wood Color
All wood deck tiles will naturally fade to a silvery-gray color when exposed to UV sunlight. The rate of weathering depends on the level of direct sun exposure, local climate conditions, and how often any protective treatments are applied. This natural aging process is a defining characteristic of exterior wood decking.
To slow this fading and maintain the tiles in optimal condition, we recommend applying a high-quality decking oil as soon as practical after installation, using a brush or roller. Regular application of decking oil not only helps preserve the original wood color, but also reduces moisture loss from the surface of the wood slats. This can help minimize checking (small surface cracks) and splitting, although some degree of checking is a normal part of the natural weathering process.
For best long-term performance, choose decking oils with trans-oxide pigments, UV inhibitors, or other advanced UV-absorbing compounds, along with a high solids content. These formulations extend the life of the finish, reduce maintenance frequency, and enhance the durability and appearance of wood deck tiles. Many premium decking sealers also provide added protection against mold and mildew, helping maintain both the beauty and longevity of your decking system.

Periodic Cleaning
From time to time, it may be necessary to use a commercial cleaning product to both clean the surface of the deck and kill mold spores. Deck brightening products may also be used providing you carefully test the product in an inconspicuous area to ensure it will achieve the results you require.
Pressure Washing
A pressure washer may be used to remove any built-up dirt, mold or mildew from the surface of the tiles, however we recommend you firstly test the pressure washing on an inconspicuous area
Storage of Tiles Prior to Installation
If the tiles have been supplied on a pallet with stretch wrapping, all the plastic wrapping should be removed and the pallet left in a dry, shaded or covered position out of direct sunlight and exposure to rainfall, until the tiles are installed.
