Heavy duty, pedestal supported structural Ipe wood tiles for beautiful, easy-to-build elevated roof decks, terraces and plazas.

Archatrak Ipe wood structural tiles supported by adjustable height pedestals create highly stable, long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing elevated decks for both commercial and residential applications.

Using pedestal supports at each tile corner dramatically reduces installation time while eliminating the cost and complexity of steel or wood joist systems. No screws, nails, clips, or fastening individual planks to joists are required.

Archatrak structural wood tiles are produced exclusively with kiln dried Ipe (Tabebuia sp.) wood in two sizes:

  • 24” x 24” and 24” x 48”(nom.)
  • Additional sizes are available, subject to minimum order quantities and production lead times

Benefits of Archatrak Structural Ipe Wood Tiles

Quicker and Easier Deck Construction

No need for wood or steel joists or extensive sub-structures. No nailing, screwing or clipping planks to joists.

Less Weight Loading on the Rooftop

Each 24” × 24” Ipe wood decking tile weighs only 23 lbs. Each pedestal is less than 2.5 lbs.

No Penetration of Roof Membranes

The wide circular base of the pedestal supports spreads the load and avoids damage to waterproof membranes.

Easier to Move Components to Site

Tiles and pedestals can be transported in a goods elevator if needed – no cranes or heavy lifting equipment mandatory.

Simple Rooftop Maintenance Access

Individual tiles can simply be lifted up – avoiding the need to pull up and re-install multiple wood planks.

No Penetration of Roof Membranes

The wide circular base of the pedestal supports spreads the load and avoids damage to waterproof membranes.

Characteristics of Ipe Decking Tiles

Premium A-Grade Ipe Hardwood

Archatrak Ipe wood decking tiles are manufactured using A grade lumber which permits some knots, color variation, dark streaks, pin holes and checking etc

Tiles are supplied in a natural, unfinished state. It is highly recommended that a good quality decking oil is applied as soon as practical after installation to assist in maintaining the color of the wood and extending the life of the deck.

Our Ipe wood decking tiles are treated with wax on the ends of the wood slats to reduce the possibility of end cracking. During handling and transport, some wax might be deposited on the surface of the slats. For further information about dealing with this potential issue, please see under the Maintenance tab in the section below.

Since Ipe wood tiles are relatively light compared to wood planks – 23 lb for 24” x 24” tiles and 46 lb for 24” x 48” tiles, the potential risk of wind uplift needs to be considered in some site conditions. A hold down mechanism can be supplied which locks the tiles together in an array and secures them to the pedestal heads. An integrated washer and screw assembly is inserted into a precut kerf in each corner of the tiles and the screw is then tightened to secure the corners of the four tiles to the pedestal head.

Installation

Archatrak Ipe wood tiles are specifically designed for constructing elevated decks using only adjustable height paver supports placed at each corner of the tiles.

Fixed height rubber pads can also be used when using these tiles for patio resurfacing, but it is essential that good air circulation is maintained under the tiles and that the tiles will not be subject to prolonged contact with water.

Installation Guide

Installing deck pavers on pedestals

Our hardwood decking tiles are not factory coated with any decking oil but are supplied in a natural unfinished state. We highly recommend applying a good quality decking oil as soon as practical after installation, which assists in maintaining the original wood color and provides some protection from airborne particles which can leave dark spots on unfinished timber. Tiles should ideally be re-coated with decking oil at regular intervals to preserve their appearance and enhance their working life.

In accordance with normal industry practice, our Ipe wood decking tiles are treated with wax on the ends of the wood slats to reduce the possibility of end cracking. During handling and transport, some wax might be deposited on the surface of the slats. This is normal, but if it is perceived as a problem, it can be removed by scraping and use of an appropriate solvent.

Be aware that this wax may sometimes bleed a short distance along the top surface of the tiles, especially when they are exposed to hot, sunny conditions and have not been coated with decking oil after installation. The color contrast between the natural wood and the wax bleed may look as if the ends of the tiles have been saturated with water.

Although this phenomenon should disappear over time as the tiles weather naturally, we nevertheless strongly recommend applying a good quality decking oil to the wood tiles as soon as practical after installation to reduce the potential for bleeding and reduce the rate of fading to a silvery grey.

Even when some weathering has occurred, some wax can remain in the pores of dry wood, resulting in some difference in color between the waxed tile ends and main body of the slats when the tiles are wet.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Structural Wood Tiles

Customer Support

Archatrak Ipe wood decking tiles can be secured to the pedestals used to support them using a specialized fastener/washer systems assembly that locks the corners of the tiles to the pedestals. It is especially important to implement this hold down system on high-rise building roof decks or high-wind areas. Perimeter restraint at the walls, parapets or railing is also essential.

Archatrak structural decking tiles are produced exclusively using Ipe lumber because it has a well established reputation and extensive commercial use in applications such as boardwalks and roof decks. It is one the hardest, strongest and most dense timber species which resists scratching, splintering, cracking and deformation and is generally accepted as having a Class A fire rating.

Archatrak has tested 24” x 24” Ipe wood decking tiles in accordance with ASTM E2322-03 which indicated that failure of the tiles did not occur until the uniform load on a single tile supported at each corner by plastic pedestals exceeded 2800 lbs.

Structural tiles can be cut with a power saw but it is essential that the structural integrity is not compromised by cutting. This will require one or two of the three bearers on the underside of 24” x 24” tiles to be removed and repositioned if the tiles are being trimmed perpendicular to the slat direction.
